Marty Taupau produces early favourite for try-saver of the year in Manly’s clash with Rabbitohs

Marty Taupau drove Cameron Murray back after he came within inches of the try line

Sea Eagles behemoth Marty Taupau produced a brilliant try-saving tackle to deny Rabbitohs’ No.13 Cameron Murray a near certain try.

In the 22nd minute of their Round 4 clash at Lottoland, the Rabbitohs lock stormed to the try line off a short pass from Damien Cook, only to be hit by a brick wall in Taupau.

“I can’t believe that tackle from Marty Taupau,” Greg Alexander said in commentary.

“Cameron Murray broke the first tackle and was over the try line and somehow Marty Taupau was able to hold him up.

“Stop it, that is too good. How did he do that? The strength of the man.”

Not only did the Manly prop halt Murray’s momentum, but he drove him back and prevented him from stretching out and planting the ball down.

Unfortunately for Taupau and the Sea Eagles, Sam Burgess crashed over in the corner moments later to level the scores at 6-6.

However, Taupau’s last gasp tackle shows the strides Manly have made in recent weeks under Des Hasler.

After losing their first two games of the season, Tom Trbojevic’s return against the Warriors in Round 3 sparked a renaissance.

Taupau finished the first half against the Rabbitohs with 83 run metres from 10 charges to go with his try saver and saw Manly trailing 10-6 in a hard-fought contest.
